The Umayyad Masjid is arguably the fourth holiest site in Islam after the Ka‘bah, Al-Masjid An-Nabawi and Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa. It is located in the heart of the Syrian capital, Damascus, a city the Prophet (saw) described as, “one of the best cities of Shaam (Greater Syria).”

Why is this Masjid special?

• Built in 715 CE by Caliph Al-Walid I

• One of the oldest & largest mosques in the world (capacity: 5,000 worshippers)

• Built on the site of a Christian Basilica of John the Baptist (Prophet Yahya, AS)

• Houses what is believed to be the head of Prophet Yahya (AS)

• Home to the White Minaret, where Prophet Isa (AS) is prophesied to descend before the Day of Judgment.
